When Phaethon, the son of Helios, climbed into the sun god's chariot, he lost control. The horses, driven wildly, burned and froze the earth. Zeus reacted by striking Phaethon with a devastating thunderbolt. Rubens depicts Phaethon being thrown from Helios' golden chariot, his hair ablaze, reflecting a burning earth, surrounded by terrified horses and deities of the seasons, who are responsible for the laws and order of time.
